Dovedale

If you’re visiting our gastropub in Derbyshire to immerse yourself in the Peak District, Dovedale is not to be missed. Protected by the National Trust, this stunning valley has a variety of different features that fill the area of natural outstanding beauty. Whether you visit for a walk, or to spend the day there, you’re sure to be blown away by the scenery.

What To Do Whilst You’re There?

Iconically remembered for the River Dove and it’s impressive limestone ravines, there are plenty of sights to take in during your visit. Arguably the most iconic part of your trip will be the picturesque stepping stones. These famous stepping stones are less than half a mile from the main car park. Another popular landmark amongst the park is Thorpe Cloud. The isolated limestone hill also known as a reef knoll sits between the villages of Ilam and Thorpe, lying right between the two counties of Derbyshire and Staffordshire.

Standing at 287 metres, Thorpe Cloud has proved itself popular amongst hikers. The National Trust ranger team have also installed a waymarked route to the summit of the hill. To follow this, look out for the blue posts. Thanks to the wildlife in the park, Dovedale has also become a hotspot for photographers. During your visit, you’re likely to come across dippers, herons, buzzards and ducks all along the River Dover.

Facilities Available

When you arrive in Dovedale, you will be able to use the car park throughout your stay. However, this is not a National Trust car park and so a parking charge will apply to all visitors who choose to use it. For those that are members of the National Trust, you can use the ca park located one mile along the road at Ilam Park for free. There are toilets at Dovedale that are managed by Peak District National Park Authority. Therefore, there is a 20p charge to use these so don’t forget your change.

There are also a team of friendly volunteers at the mobile information barn stands between Easter and October every year. There, you’ll be able to find anything from walking guides/maps to toys, postcards and more gifts.
