Beat The January Blues With Events in Derbyshire

Beat The January Blues With Events in Derbyshire

The new year – and a new decade – has arrived. And with it comes all the excitement of a clean slate, and twelve whole months to look forward. True, January may not feel like the most exciting of months. In fact, it can feel like a little bit of a slog. But that doesn’t mean you have to spend the whole time shut up inside mourning for the Christmas just gone.

To help you plan out your January, we’ve put together a diary of events happening in Derbyshire this month. So, read on to find out more and kick those January blues to the curb for good.

Orienteering at Kedleston Hall

From 3rd January 2020 – 31st December 2020

If getting out and about and being more active is one of your New Years resolutions, why not try something a little different? Orienteering at Kedleston Hall is a fantastic activity for all ages and gives visitors the chance to discover aspects of this National Trust parkland you’ve never seen before.

Orienteering involves using a map to navigate between points, with the aim being to find the quickest route. Orienteering at Kedleston Hall is suitable for children over 8 years old, and you can bring your dog along for the walk if you want to.

Dine & Discover at Calke Abbey

Throughout January 2020

Another National Trust site, Calke Abbey is situated amongst 600 acres of historic parkland. And this ‘un-stately’ home (as it is known) has more than a few stories to tell!

Throughout January the Abbey will play host to a range of Dine & Discover events, including Calke Unlocked, a high energy, interactive tour that’s bags of fun! What’s more, it’s followed by a two-course lunch at the on-site cafe to allow for a thorough post-tour debrief. Other Dine & Discover events include Biscuits, Cakes and Scones Baking Demos, Mindfulness Walks and Servants’ Stories.

Markeaton Parkrun

Every Saturday at 9:00 am

It’s free, it gets your heart racing, and it’s good for you. What more could you want? Parkrun is a 5km run that takes place every Saturday at 9 am at Markeaton Park. Whether you run or walk, it’s all in the name of fun and the only person you are racing against is yourself. Maybe it’s time to start a new hobby?

Ghost Hunt At Old Gresley Hall

Friday 10th January 2020

Well known for its spooky goings-on and terrifying history, Gresley Old Hall is perfect for a spot of ghost hunting. Built from the remains of an old priory and used as a farmhouse, among other things, thrill-seeking visitors can join the Paranormal Eye Team as they conduct vigils, spirit board sessions, table tipping and seances throughout the evening. Perhaps it will be you who see the ghost of the young girl who reportedly haunts the building regularly!

Stargazing at Alvaston Park

Saturday 25th January 2020

On Saturday 25th January, head over to Alvaston Park between 5 pm and 9 pm for a free evening of stargazing and exploration. Visitors will be able to cast an eye over the vast sky above through one of the Derby & District Astronomy Societies telescopes, as well as take part in space inspired arts and crafts and storytelling.

Chinese New Year at the Erewash Museum

Saturday 25th January 2020

The year of the rat is almost upon us! Welcome it in style at the Erewash Museum in Ilkeston this year. Throughout the afternoon there will be rat themed lantern making workshops and at 5:30 pm the procession will begin, making its way through Ilkeston Market Place led by Severn Star Lion Dance for an evening of music, storytelling and (of course!) dancing.

Wedding Fair at Derby Museums

Sunday 26th January 2020

Tying the knot this year? Then you’re going to need a lot of inspiration for your big plans! And you can fill your boots at the Wedding Fair at Derby Museum & Art Gallery as it plays host to a vast array of vendors including photographers, florists, wedding dress designers and more!
